It is good practice to install the NVIDIA Linux Driver while X is not running, and it is a good idea to prevent X from starting on reboot in case there are problems with the installation (otherwise you may find yourself with a broken system that automatically tries to start X, but then hangs during the startup, preventing you from doing the repairs necessary to fix X).

Depending on your network setup, runlevels 1, 2 or 3 should be sufficient for installing the Driver.

[Y/n] y :: Replace prison-frameworks with extra/prison? It seems like between the open source and proprietary drivers, there is a lot happening including name changes. because fglrx/catalyst is feature-EOL it wont support Xserver 1.18. Now you have to choose: want the free, opensource driver and a newer Xserver OR catalyst. If Catalyst is effectively feature-EOL with only bug fixes, how is the free/open version doing? are only there until the opensource driver was good enough so the propritary one could drop this generation again.

Level 3 typically includes networking services, so if utilities used by the system during installation depend on a remote filesystem, Levels 1 and 2 will be insufficient.

If your system typically boots to a console with a command prompt, you should not need to change anything.

does it crash after loading the desktop environment (i.e compiz) or before the login screen if you can get the login screen, have you tried a Ubuntu-2d environment?

I only get the loginscreen when changing the to "vesa" drivers.

I haven't played with WINE in a long time and am using the native Steam. I dont know how it would be with your Card but you can always try it. Everything was successful when doing the pacman update.
